More then 1000 firefighters are continuing efforts to contain dozens of bushfires in Australia's eastern state of New South Wales as record-breaking hot weather continues. More than a quarter of the state is listed at the highest possible fire warning of catastrophic risk. Kym Fuhrmann reports the Rural Fires Service is worried about blazes in Sydney's north-west, the Blue Mountains and the Hawksbury.

A partially disabled man died from smoke inhalation after trying to escape his home when his bed caught fire Friday morning. Billy Martin McCoy, 55, was found collapsed on the floor near his bedroom in the 1500 block of South Gillette Avenue, Fire Department spokesman Bill French said. It wasn't immediately clear what caused the bed to catch fire, but French said an investigator found smoking materials nearby.

A two-alarm fire that ripped through a Beaverton apartment complex early this morning has left eight residents looking for a new place to stay. Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue responded to the building, located at 4804 S.E. Oleson Road, when several residents called 911 around 4 a.m. and reported seeing large flames coming from the balcony of the complex's third floor. No residents or firefighters were injured.

BUSINESSES were evacuated from their offices after a chemical leak from a lorry. Emergency services were called to the Stanley Green Trading Estate, in Cheadle Hulme, Stockport, after reports that a transport tanker was leaking an unknown gas. Forty firefighters in chemical suits contained the leak and diluted the resulting vapour with using water spray.

Four firefighters were injured when a ceiling fell on them during a Wednesday morning fire at SJ Professional Painting in Etna Township. The company's box truck, sitting 3 feet away from the building, was engulfed when West Licking Joint Fire District crews arrived just after midnight, Battalion Chief Tom Bingham said. The fire had spread to the building, going up the side and into the attic.

When Henderson firefighters arrived at a residence near Boulder Highway and Racetrack Road about 7:45 p.m. Thursday, flames and smoke from a garage had engulfed a vehicle parked in the driveway. It took about five minutes to bring the fire under control, keeping it confined to the three-car garage at 617 Braverwood Drive, said Battalion Chief Matthew Morris.

Shirley Sausage, the 82-year-old owner, was the only person inside when smoke started to fill the air about 11:45 a.m. She escaped unharmed after a relative came to help after seeing smoke from across the road. A house fire erupted on Ryder Lake Road early Wednesday morning after a couch caught fire. Chilliwack Fire Department was called to the 48000-block in the pre-dawn hour of six a.m. "When firefighters arrived they found a fire that originated in a couch had been extinguished by the resident of the home by using water from a garden hose," said assistant fire chief Jeff Ullyot.
